27. CCLR Recommended Books
Here are a collection of books we’ve founded to be extremely helpful, informative, and eye opening to the philosophy behind land recycling and the restoration of the American dream.
The Death and life of Great American Cities.
Jacobs, Jane. Vintage Books, 1961.
Many seemingly axiomatic observations about cities, such as the need to stop destroying neighborhoods to build express highways and the importance of encouraging mixed-use districts and lively streets, were first given articulate expression in this book.
The Fractured Metropolis.
Barnett, Jonathon. W.W. Norton, 1992.
Offers a bold "National Agenda for Action," following an extensive discussion of metropolitan fragmentation, the rise of edge cities, the prevention and cure of urban sprawl, community creation, entrepreneurial centers, bypassed frontier areas, restoration of older neighborhoods, and the elements of city design.
Land Use in America.
Diamond, Henry L., and Patrick F. Noonan. Lincoln Institute and Island Press, 1996.
A ten-point agenda to help America's communities accommodate future growth in more environmentally sound and fiscally responsible ways, plus papers contributed by 12 leading figures in government, business, academia and the nongovernmental arena.
Lessons from the Field: Unlocking Economic Potential with an Environmental Key.
Pepper, Edith. The Northeast-Midwest Institute, Washington, 1997.
An examination of 20 examples of successful brownfield reuses around the United States. Using a case study approach, this book offers a series of "lessons learned" from these projects, highlighting successful state programs, innovative financing measures, public/private partnerships, and strong community involvement efforts.
Metropolitics: A Regional Agenda for Community and Stability.
Orfield, Myron. The Brookings Institution and Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, 1997.
Uses brilliant, colorful GIS maps to document the spread of urban poverty from inner cities to inner suburbs, and the concurrent rise of affluent, outer-ring suburbs. The author, a Minnesota state representative, argues that this pattern has lead to great income disparities, a lack of affordable housing, and poor land use planning. Combating this trend will require forging strong political alliances between residents from inner cities and inner ring suburbs to advance truly "regional" planning.
New Visions for Metropolitan America.
Downs, Anthony. Lincoln Institute (Washington) and The Brookings Institution (Cambridge), 1994.
Analysis of the problems and side-effects of recent "growth management" efforts and proposes a new vision to deter suburban sprawl that would not isolate poorer populations in depressed urban areas. This book examines the relationships between central cities and suburbs, tracks urban decline and inner city problems, and outlines alternative visions for growth. Three alternative visions that reverse the trend to sprawl by emphasizing a regional sense of community rather than one oriented to a single jurisdiction. To order, call 1-800-275-1447.
Recycling the City: The Use and Reuse of Urban Land.
Rosalind Greenstein and Yesim Sungu-Eryilmaz, eds. Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, 2004
This collection of essays examines underutilized, abandoned and vacant urban land within political, economic, institutional and policy contexts. In the volume’s three sections, the authors consider the issues at the national, regional, local and site levels; examine redevelopment processes and policies; and describe some potential uses of vacant and abandoned land, including urban agriculture, green development, and the preservation of an industrial landscape for cultural uses.
Rural by Design: Maintaining Small Town Character.
Arendt, Randall, et al. American Planning Association, 1994.
"The authors demonstrate that rural character can be maintained, or an area can be urbanized, depending on how new development is designed and placed."
Streets of Hope: The Fall and Rise of an Urban Neighborhood.
P. Medorr and H. Sklar, South End Press, 1994
This book uses the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative in Boston's most impoverished neighborhood as a case study to show how effective organizing reinforces neighborhood leadership, encourages grassroots power, and leads to successful public-private partnerships and comprehensive community development.
Turning Brownfields Into Greenbacks: Developing and Financing Environmentally Contaminated Urban Real Estate.
Robert A. Simmons, Urban Land Institute, 1998
Investigates the possibilities and techniques to turn contaminated land into a profit opportunity. More than 50 tools and strategies help you maneuver through regulations, financing, liability, remediation, and loan guarantees and assurances. Case studies included.
