Driving Revitalization Through Redevelopment and Resiliency – Westbury, NY
Collaboration and diversification of resources and expertises were key messages echoed at Driving Revitalization Through Redevelopment and Resiliency workshop organized by the Center for Creative Land Recycling held on December 4, 2018 at the Viana Hotel in Westbury, NY. Over 110 people attended this unique workshop to learn about the trends in Long Island redevelopment and to mingle with leading state experts to turn community blights into admired spaces for economic development and sustainable living.
The “Defending Shoreline” panel provided critical information about programs and specific measures being funded and implemented on Long Island in response to climate impacts.

The morning keynote, Congressman Tom Suozzi, spoke about the importance of a supporting the long vision and developing a solid plan. He stated that no one cares as much about your project as you do so it is up to you to drive and push through the initiative. The Congressman spoke about the need to collaborate with many different government departments and gain input from the developers and community early on.

Other speakers reinforced similar themes of building strategic partnerships and involving developers as early on as possible in the plan to gain valuable insights and accelerate the process. NYS DEC provided the latest information on changes to brownfield regulations,emerging contaminants and utilizing fill materials. NYS Department of State reviewed the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) programs, with new grant funding for BOAs expected in early 2019. Speakers on the “Show Me the Money” panel highlighted the diverse sources of capital need to build your financing stack including tax incentives like the Brownfield Cleanup Program or New Markets Tax Credits, and NY State grant funding through the Consolidated Funding Application and other programs.
